Ready to give your home a fresh, new look? Before you break out those paint rollers, be sure that you have prepared the area properly.

Clear the Area

Painting can be messy and the last thing you want is to accidentally spill some on your favorite couch or throw rug. Before you begin painting any room, be sure to clear off as much furniture and accessories as possible. For items that can not be removed, try pulling them into the center of the room and covering with plastic to keep them safe – and out of your way.

Clean, Clean, and Clean Some More

Dust and dirt can ruin any paint job. Dust and vacuum every surface using a dry towel and vacuum cleaner. Be sure to get into all of those nooks and crannies. Walls, moldings and trim may need a good scrubbing to get built up grime off. Remember, the cleaner the surface, the better the paint will adhere.

Smooth Rough Surfaces

The time to fix any cracks, scratches and holes is before you pick up that paintbrush. Even the smallest imperfection left on a wall will show once it is painted with a fresh coat. Sand down any rough spots; patch those imperfections, and be sure to scrape off any peeling or cracked paint already on the walls.

Don’t Forget to Prime

Always adhere a high-quality primer to the wall first. This will help your new color adhere well and will stop older colors from bleeding through. Not sure which primer to use? Here are a few tips:

  • New Drywall: use a water-based primer
  • Smoke Stained Walls: use an oil-based primer
  • Paneling: use an oil-based primer
  • Repainting Walls:  feel free to use paint that already contains a primer. Once a wall has been painted, the undercoat works as a type of primer, so buying paint with primer in it works well.

Taping Is Important

You may think that you can handle cutting around those moldings, windows and doorframes, but the chances are your painting skills may leave you with small blotches and crooked lines. Make the job easier (and faster) by applying painters’ tape around sconces, lights, switch plates and moldings. It is one step you won’t want to skip.
